Hosted by Tai Tokerau Timebank, Whangārei “Green Drinks” spent an absolutely beautiful evening wandering round this very special sanctuary which has been nurtured since 2007 by Jeremy Busck and a team of volunteers. Overrun with pest plants and filled with rubbish at the time, they have worked tirelessly to transform what was ‘swampland’ into a fully functioning natural wetland sanctuary.

As Jeremy guided us around the wetland we heard its story and learnt the importance of wetlands to planetary health. Work included planting 50,000 native trees, 6,000 reeds, removing rubbish, building facilities, constructing pollutant and pest traps and assisting the local council with drainage from neighbouring floodplains. Dragonfly Springs makes an important contribution to the health of Whangārei Harbour through its vital role in absorbing runoff from the surrounding built up area.

One of the most important roles of the wetland is its educational aspect. Numerous school students over the years have been inspired and enlightened by their visits.

Gathering back in the spacious and sheltered shed space, we enjoyed snacks, drinks and conversation around the fire pit, grateful that the evening was dry and clear!
Jeremy is always grateful for any help he can get - you would be very welcome to join their volunteer sessions on Thursday mornings.
