We were all grateful that there was a pause in the winter weather and the sunshine that briefly came out at the recent Tree Pruning workshop and working bee at Karikari Peninsula on 22 June.
Massive thanks to all the helpers who attended, especially our Timebank member Roger Gale whose expertise and knowledge on Tree Pruning was invaluable on the day. 7 adults and 1 toddler attended, making for a hands-on day of learning and fun.
The morning started by Roger explaining the techniques around Tree Pruning. How-to, when-to and answered some great questions. It was then out to the garden to practice the skills! A Peach tree needed some TLC and it quickly transformed with helpers pruning away the necessary branches with Roger's guidance. Next it was time to tackle the ginormous mulberry tree! Roger showed us how to carefully climb and prune away those larger limbs. A few of us helped by clearing away the fallen branches, even Miss 3 enjoyed helping!
We were able to practice the pruning skills on numerous other trees, orange, lime, lemon as well as foraging some delicious garden treats-cape gooseberry and tamarillos. Cuttings of the trees were also available and taken home by members to be planted in their own gardens.
Time went quickly and it was soon time to enjoy a hot cuppa and shared kai together.
Member Ron Skerman expressed his deep gratitude to all who helped on the day. The magnitude at what was achieved on his property was amazing and it was touching to see Ron so very grateful. Timebank was able to make this happen for Ron and it was great to get together, connect, network, learn and enjoy the sea breeze of the stunning Karikari Peninsula.
All who attended learnt so much thanks to Roger's workshop, and the working bee enabled the skills to be practiced.
